A local Audubon Society who's general mission is
to:
1. Promote the appreciation of natural environments and the needs of
birds and other wildlife.
2. Work for preservation and sustainability of natural ecosystems.
3. Provide an avenue for individual participation in affecting
environmental polices at all levels of government.
This is a Chapter of the National Audubon Society and is an active
grass root organization.
Promoting global environmental stewardship in
order to conserve and wisely manage the Nation's marine and coastal
resources. Describing, monitoring, and predicting changes
in the Earth's environment in order to ensure and enhance
sustainable economic opportunities.
The NODC is one of the environmental data
centers operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). The NODC provides ocean data management and
ocean data services to researchers and other users in the United
States and around the world.
The Institute is dedicated to basic research
in climate variability, climate predictability and climate change.
It has been established to improve understanding and prediction of
the variations of the earth's climate through scientific research,
and to share both the fruits of this research and the tools
necessary to carry out this research with society as a whole.

In 1984 the CBL lab began behavioral work on Pacific coast
bottlenose dolphins by constructing a descriptive and illustrated
ethogram (Weaver 1987). Next, the CBL began carrying out land-based
behavior observations (Hanson and Defran 1993, Simonaitis 1990)
which are possible because these bottlenose dolphins live so close
to the shoreline. The focus of the lab's behavioral work has been to
document the impact of a wide range of temporal and ecological
variables on dolphin behavior states such as travel, feed and
social.
The Coastal Ecosystems Research Foundation is
a non-profit organisation whose aim is to fund ecological research
through eco-tourism. Research is presently focussed on the whales
and dolphins of British Columbia's Central Coast. The general public
is invited to participate in the research directly as 'paying
volunteers'. The program funds the research completely, allowing us
to remain independent, and it also gets our findings out to the
public directly, in a form that they can understand, having gotten
their hands dirty themselves.

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) was established in 1888 as a
non-profit institution devoted to research and education in basic
biology. Lewis Thomas, author of The Lives of a Cell, has called the
MBL "the uniquely national center for biology in this country."
Scientists and students throughout the world come to the MBL to
conduct research, teach, study, and collaborate with other
scientists. They use the diverse and abundant organisms found in
surrounding waters as model systems in their research.
(University of Hawaii)
The Department of Zoology maintains a close relationship with the
University's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). The HIMB
Coconut Island Laboratory is located in Kaneohe Bay, about 25
minutes from UHM with transportation from campus available twice
daily on weekdays. The laboratory provides facilities and services
for faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students, and
visiting scholars, for research and education in marine biology and
related topics. The research conducted at HIMB covers a broad range
of topics, including coral reef biology and ecology, tropical
aquaculture, fish endocrinology, behavior of reef animals, pollution
and management of marine ecosystems, coastal biogeochemical
processes, and fisheries.
The National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC)
is one of the national environmental data centers operated by the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S.
Department of Commerce. The main NODC facility is located in Silver
Spring, Maryland. The NODC also has field offices collocated with
major government or private oceanographic laboratories in Woods
Hole, MA; Miami, FL; La Jolla, CA; Seattle, WA, and Honolulu,
Hawaii.
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
is the largest independent American oceanographic research
institution. It is dedicated to the study of all aspects of marine
science and engineering and to the education of marine scientists
and engineers.
The International Marine Mammal Association
Inc. (IMMA) is a not-for-profit organization, founded in New
Brunswick, Canada in 1974. Since then, IMMA has been dedicated to
the conservation of marine mammals and their habitats worldwide.
Concern over the exploitation of marine mammals, the degradation of
marine ecosystems and the need for marine protected and conservation
areas were priorities when the organization was first formed.
The subject of protected marine species is a
large one, concerned with all aspects of biology and wildlife
management. I will attempt to put various resources into context and
a suggested order for visiting, to make the most of getting
acquainted with the field.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is the
largest independent marine science research facility in the United
States. Founded in 1930, the Institution is dedicated to the study
of all aspects of marine science and to the education of marine
scientists.
In the following pages, you'll find a wealth of
information about our innovative and cost-effective programs for
protecting some of the world's threatened and endangered species,
including whales, dolphins, tigers, rhinos, and many others.
Nineteen centuries ago, Plutarch, a Greek
moralist and biographer made this statement: "to the dolphin alone,
beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek:
friendship for no advantage". In our own times Barbara Tufty made the
comment "he [Dolphins] also exhibits a friendly willingness to
cooperate with other earth creatures -- a rare attribute which another
animal, Homo Sapiens, has not yet learned to do with any consistency".
Are you looking for an unusual whale? Why not
look in an unusual place? Try looking in a river. Or in a tree. If
you're looking for a Bouto or Amazon river dolphin you'd be looking in
the right place!
Whale Times will take you on an adventure to the
ocean. Do you like seals, sharks, penguins and whales? Then you're
going to love Whale Times. Find out how your favorite animals survive
in the sea. What they eat, where they live and much more.
Turtle Trax was conceived with these purposes in
mind
● To provide a Web site that gave people a chance
to become familiar with the wonder and beauty of the marine turtle.
● To make people aware of the reasons why all
species of marine turtles are either threatened or endangered.
● To highlight a particularly gruesome threat to
the green sea turtle, the fibropapilloma tumor.
● To tell the story of one particular group of
Hawaiian green sea turtles, the Honokowai group of Maui.
