College Internships at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center

Thank you for inquiring about internships at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Our internships are not paid; you will have to provide your own room and board if your project is accepted.

If you are interested in applying for an internship with us, you'll need to do the following:

1. Get a professor from your college program to back you with your project.
2. Write a project proposal including a subject/topic of study and outline, to be signed by your sponsoring professor. The topic of study is up to you. Some recommended projects are outlined below.
3. Submit written proposal to Mr. Robert Schoelkopf, Director, by mail or email and then call one week to ten days later for comments and further arrangements on the project. (PO Box 773, Brigantine, NJ 08203).

Possible Projects:

· Summer:  Dolphin Identification and Behavior: Our on-going photo identification study of Dolphin pods along the south Jersey shore. These photos are usually taken from the beaches and possibly from a sightseeing boat operation out of south Jersey. Dorsal fin identifications are recorded, as well as pod/family behavior throughout the summer.

· Summer:  Dolphin / Sea Turtle physiology: Because we do not have a high incidence of live strandings, interns may assist our stranding technicians in working up the carcasses of dead Dolphins and/or Sea Turtles.

· Summer:  Sea Life Education Center Interpretive Guide - guide our visitors through the Center and explain our displays, our purpose and our views on marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation. This internship is suitable for Communications majors.
